Christopher Voss: Biography
​Christopher Voss is an American painter, educator, and curator whose work investigates family structures, psychological narratives, and the metaphysical tensions present within contemporary domestic life. Born and raised in Midland, Texas, Voss developed an early interest in drawing, storytelling, and visual communication.He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Art and Communications from Angelo State University in 1998, where he received multiple Texas Intercollegiate Press Association awards for editorial cartooning and graduated with honors in the senior exhibition. Voss later pursued graduate studies at Texas Tech University, earning a Master of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing in 2010. While at Texas Tech, he served as an Instructor of Record, Graduate Teaching Assistant, and MFA Student Coordinator. His MFA thesis exhibition, “Proximity,” presented a comprehensive body of drawings, sculptures, and paintings examining spatial and psychological relationships within the home. His accompanying thesis publication, “Raging Against the Divisive Machine,” examined the conceptual framework underlying his work.Voss has exhibited extensively in both regional and international venues. His exhibitions include solo presentations such as “Fragments and Causality” at Angelo State University’s Gallery 193, “Scaping Spaces” and “Kinetic Remnants” at the South Plains College Fine Arts Gallery, and “Home: Seen. Unseen.” at W83 Gallery in New York City. His work has also appeared in numerous group and juried exhibitions, including the Los Angeles Art Fair, Spectrum Miami Art Show, the Monaco Yacht Show International Artifact Exhibition, and the Angelo State University Art Faculty Biennial Exhibition at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts.His artwork has been recognized in several national and international competitions, including honors from Gallery 25N, the Circle Foundation for the Arts International Exhibition in Lyon,France, and the West Texas Regional Art Show. Voss was also selected as one of the top emerging artists in the Rising Eyes of Texas exhibition at the Rockport Center for the Arts.In addition to his studio practice, Voss has maintained an extensive career in arts education and community engagement. He has taught studio art at multiple institutions, including Texas Tech University, Angelo State University, and Water Valley Independent School District, where he currently teaches advanced studio courses and foundational art programs. He has been recognized for his teaching with honors, including being named Secondary Teacher of the Year at Water Valley ISD and a nomination for the Texas Outstanding Teaching Award.Voss is the founder of the Water Valley Artist Society, an organization dedicated to community arts programming, exhibitions, and educational initiatives. Through the society and his private studio, Voss Art Studio, he organizes regional exhibitions, workshops, and mentorship opportunities for emerging artists and students. He also established the Water Valley Artist Society Art Fund, which supports graduating senior art students pursuing further artistic education.Working from his studio in West Texas, Voss continues to produce paintings, mixed-media works, and prints while participating in exhibitions, lectures, and community art initiatives. His work has been featured in numerous publications and reviews, and he remains active as both an artist and advocate for arts education.
